In 400 years of their living in the United States, Afro-American has accomplished a brilliant literary achievement. Many excellent writers was booming accompanied with the flourishing literary works been published during this time. But in the account of orthodox American literature history, Afro-American literature has long been in the status of absence, without enough recognition. This thesis explores the history of Afro-American literature based on the theory of Post-colonialism and concludes that cultural hegemony implemented by mainstream society which is dominated by Euramerican culture superiorism is the main reason of the ignorance. This cultural hegemony influences the cultural awareness of Afro-American and leads them to the conscious of double-identity outsider which greatly impact the Afro-American tradition and put their culture and literature on the edge with chronicle ignorance or despite, as well as influence their ethnic solidarity and corrupt their self-esteem and self-confidence. In the course of reviving ethnic culture, Afro-American carry their culture and literature tradition forward which is surviving the cultural hegemony. Afro-American develop and build up the ideal cultural ethnic image in their literature as an effort to dissolve the oppression of Euramerican culture hegemony and bring in the flourish of Afro-American culture.
