During this process, the culture of Vietnam developed tremendously and the dissemination of Chinese characters and art in Vietnam was well received by a large number of Vietnamese; it also turned into a model to follow and learn from for the Vietnamese writers, which promoted the flourishing of Vietnamese culture. For years now, Chinese literature has continuously received the acclaim and consideration of Vietnamese readers.Among the large number of Chinese modern and contemporary literary works translated in Vietnamese, the most influential ones were the plays of Cao Yu. Cao Yu is a well-known playwright of modern China and his dramas are not only of great value here, but they are also playing a decisive role in the literary circles abroad. In Vietnam, Cao Yu's plays had an early debut in the literary world, as well as on the stage. It was especially 《The Tempest》 - a play in four acts - that was performed numerous times, so that most of the Vietnamese public got to know it first, from the theatre. A lot of students from China and abroad, who did research on 《The Tempest》 , have already achieved wonderful results about it, but the knowledge of this dramatist and the research done on the influence of this plays in Vietnam remain open to many other approaches, for my attempt of making 《The Tempest》 the subject of my thesis, tackles on just a few aspects of this famous author and his works. In the beginning of the 40's, the well-known Vietnamese writer, Dang Thai Mai had already translated 《The Tempest》 into Vietnamese and upon studying it further, he introduced it to the Vietnamese public. The apparition of 《The Tempest》 immediately raised the interest of the latter - maybe due the similarity with the cultural and social background, that made Vietnamese readers to better assimilate it and, most probably, due to the presence of some very outlined and unique characters in the play, together with the succinct and vernacular language; certainly, all of these made a long lasting impression on the Vietnamese readers. Moreover, 《The Tempest》 was obligatory in many universities in Vietnam. This is why a lot of Vietnamese writers and literary works bear the stamp of《The Tempest》. But how can a play that was written at the beginning of the previous century can still have such a strong influence on the Vietnamese literary creation? How can it still keep its vigor and its exquisite charm in Vietnam? What is the real condition of Vietnamese writers vis-a-vis its translation and presentation? I hope to be able to find some answers to the questions concerning these aspects. Therefore, I have divided this paper into four parts. Chapter one: Chinese Modern Literature in Vietnam; chapter two: Translation and Introduction to 《The Tempest》 ; chapter three: The Publishing and Performance of 《The Tempest》 in Vietnam; chapter four: The influence of 《The Tempest》 ".With this paper, I intend to open the way to further research on the topic, reveal some meanings to people who might want to study it in the future, as well as make a systematic, in-depth study, on the influence of Cao Yu on other writers and literary works in Vietnam. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Caoyu, 《The Tempest》, literature, modern drama, popularize, DangThai Mai, translate, Vu Trong Phung, "doubtful case", Nguyen Huy Tuong, effect, publish, perform | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
