Research About Cognate Words Of ER Ya YI Shu

Owning to the influence of the flourishing of Ancient Chinese study and the academic atmosphere in Qing Dynasty, Hao Yixing had a deep understanding of the theory of "Sound and meaning integrating together". Therefore, he had made a great achievement in interpreting Er Ya Yi Shu, especially collected lots of cognate words. This thesis takes a systematic study on these words in the book. The terms of Hao Yixing's collecting cognate words present several types: same, similar, tong, zhuan, and other formers.The sound patterns of the one-syllable cognate words in Er Ya Yi Shu contain several forms: both the initial parts and the final parts of the syllables are the same, the initial parts are different while the final parts the same, the initial parts are the same while the final parts different, both the initial parts and the finial parts are different.The semantic relationships of the one-syllable cognate words in Er Ya Yi Shu are described in main two groups. The one group of words has the same or correlated etymologic sememe and different classifying sememe. The other are interrelated with the same etymological sememe and marked off by the distinct sememe.The methods of Hao Yixing's collection can be summed up in three points: firstly, collecting cognate words through sound and meaning with the help of many kinds of documentary materials and methods; secondly, looking into the semantic relationships of the cognate words; lastly, analogizing and comparison.Although Hao Yixing had achieved a great deal in collecting cognate words, there are many defects and even errors in his book such as misunderstanding of some sound change words, incorrect explanation of some words' meaning.In a word, it is valuable for us to clear up the cognate words in Er Ya Yi Shu, to learn his methods, to try our best to make them perfect and to look out not to make the same mistakes as Hao Yixing's.
