Newspaper has its main task of getting across the message and informing its readers. The language it uses is, accordingly, different from either the literary language of novels and essays or the persuasive language of advising. Newspaper English, therefore, has its own distinctive features. This paper is an attempt to give a gamut view of the distinctive features of news English by dealing mainly with the language features of English newspapers and magazines. And the whole thesis is divided into seven parts: an introduction, five chapters and a conclusion.Chapter I gives a general view of the distinctive features of news writing while Chapter II focuses on the language features of news headlines and leads. Chapter III introduces economy in style which requires a short, terse and colorful writing that contributes to an interesting presentation of news. And Chapter IV states emotive elements in the language of news reporting. The fifth, also, the last chapter deals with the fuzziness in news reporting. This thesis concludes that to discuss newspaper English is not a matter of merely talking about the language itself. Thus, the language characteristics discussed in this thesis might be far from complete and there is still much to say about newspaper English as newspapers develop and language changes.
