| With the deepening of the foreign language education reform, the problem of professional development of foreign language teacher is becoming increasingly urgent. The current situation of the professional development of foreign language teacher in China is not satisfactory and cannot meet the need of society. The professional development of most foreign language teachers is in the pattern of experience accumulation. Most of them don't have strong self-development awareness, or they don't know how to develop themselves even if they have the awareness. On the other hand, there are some problems in foreign language teacher education in China, such as too much stress on teaching theoretical knowledge to the trainees and neglect of their knowledge background and the experiential knowledge which they have already acquired.In view of this situation, the dissertation makes theoretical study of the connotation of professional development of foreign language teacher and tries to explore an effective approach to enhancing their professional development. The professional development of foreign language teacher refers to the dynamic process of continuously developing and perfecting the professional knowledge, skills, qualities and brief system of foreign language teachers under the mechanism of teacher education. In the process, the foreign language teaches are motivated by their self-development awareness. According to the dissertation, foreign language teachers should develop themselves from the following four aspects: to foster right foreign language education brief, to acquire necessary professional knowledge and competence, to develop good professional morals and emotional attitude, and to strengthen the self-development awareness and need.There are many different approaches to enhance the professional development of foreign language teacher, such as school-based training, developing assessment of teacher, and reflective teaching.
