With the entry to the 21st century, society needs practical personnel who not only have specific knowledge but also master English. In the new situation, graduates in China are demanded to have higher qualities. Teaching English to speakers of other languages is also called for to have higher standards. While teaching, teachers should pay more attention to training students' applied skills of knowledge so as to explore students' potentialities and creativities. As English teachers, our aim is to reach that. How can we direct students to make them have effective strategies and fully assimilate what they have learnt? The author of the thesis states a modern approach about it. The approach is that directed by the teacher, students as the center roles carry out self-access learning in the English classroom. She proposes some ideas and puts them into effect. Her purpose is to arouse students' initiatives and find out their learning abilities. Fostering students' self-access learning can make them self-directed, self-encouraged and self-controlled in their studies, so that they have the abilities to learn and develop by themselves. The teaching model embodies the teaching principle that students participate in and experience their studies under the direction of the teacher. It emphasizes interaction between teachers and students.The author made an experiment to identify the effect of the approach.
