Miao Ethnic Group in Xiangxi like to express their feeling by singing in labour and living. singing is the main communication means. Ethnic Group's folk songs are rich in contents, simple and unsophisticated in styles, precise in rhythm, and graceful in melody,. It has formed its own unique style. It way of singing is characterized by a distinctive local minority's traditional flavor.This thesis starts with the study of humanistic, geographical, and historical background of the creation of Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs. Then, according to the author's field survey and accumulated materials, the thesis analyzes and introduces the music style of Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs from three aspects: its tune, the artistic rules and features of its lyrics, and its implied spiritual qualities. Based on that, it collates, analyzes and discusses two types of vocal music: ( Shao-sa and Shao-wu , or Pingqiang and Gaoqiang) which are frequently used when singing Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs. The thesis elaborates on the artistic features of singing Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs, such as their vocalizing skills, throat-moistening features, and how to grasp their singing styles, etc. By exploring and displaying the unique tradition and local artistic charm of Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs, the thesis affirms that they have great value in thoughts, arts, and aesthetics.Studying the present situation of singing Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs not only aims at eulogize its past, but more importantly aims at inherit and spread its artistic features and styles. With the development of information era, The preservation of traditional music has become a common concern. In the last part of the thesis, the author puts forward the idea that we should keep the purity and cultural features of Miao EthnicGroup's singing arts, and that we should actively explore the ways to integrate it with modern society, i.e., how to innovate it while preserving its intrinsic good traditional styles. Then the thesis proves the viewpoint from music creation, singing, and public spread, and so on. And the author brings forward many points of view and constructive suggestions in order to make Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs become a vocal art which has both modern characteristics and minority's styles, and to make it accepted widely by more and more modern people and to make it integrated with the whole world's ethnic music culture.The singing artistry of Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs is an important part of our national ethnic vocal music. By researching and studying it, the thesis is intended to provide some theoretical references for singing Miao Ethnic Group's folksongs in the future, and make some contribution to the inheritance of excellent minority's cultural heritage, and the enrichment and development of our national modern ethnic music culture.
