SI is a fundamental element of teaching process. The Study of SI is actually probing into the factors which influence learning outcome from the students' angle. It is, therefore, of great significance to teaching theory. By introducing the notion of SI in SLT setting, the present paper analyzes the intensity of SI in English class, probes the influence of SI on learning outcome and provides a new research angle to improving English classroom teaching by means of combining questionnaires, classroom observation and after-class interview. The full paper is composed of eight parts. The first part is an introduction, which states the background of raising such a topic, the theoretical significance and the practical value of this study. It also defines the topic of the study. The second part reviews and summarizes the literature concerning SI, which includes: â‘  some new viewpoints of teaching and teaching process; â‘¡ definition of SI and research advances; â‘¢the relationship between SI and learning outcome. The third part puts forward the hypothesis of this study. It analyzes the components of SI and explores the basic framework of the present study. The author thinks that SI is composed of BI, AI and CI and that there exists some correlation between SI in English class and their learning outcome. The fourth part makes clear the research instrument and subjects, explains the research procedure and analyzes the mutual relationship of every research link. Based on results statistics and analysis of SI obtained from the questionnaires and the students' exam results. The fifth part goes further into SI and its influence on learning outcome. Specifically, this part deals with reliability analysis of the questionnaire concerning SI, correlation analysis of SI variables, analysis of the effect that SI has on exam results and variation analysis of SI. Besides, results of SI obtained from the questionnaires are supplemented and tested via classroom observation and after-class interview. The sixth part further summarizes and analyzes the research findings, which indicate the relationship among variables of SI is different and that SI is a main factor that influences learning outcome, but three categories of involvement exert different influential intensity. This provides some implications for deepening English reform and enhancing English teaching. The seventh part discusses some recommendations and measures for promoting SI. It includes: ?Concise explanation, more practice, combination of guidance and practice, reasonable design of classroom teaching process; ?Refine language situation, improve language situation function to cultivate students' autonomy ; ?Flexible choice of teaching method and arousing students' interest in their studies; ?Effective questioning to promote the interaction between the teacher and students. The eighth part is closing remarks, which make a summary of this paper's standpoint and its practical significance. This part also points out some remaining problems to be further studied.
