The Acceptance And Influence Of Luxun In Japanese Colony, Korea

This dissertation studies the process of accepting and the specific aspectsof accepting Luxun in colonial Korea from the period of Japanese annexationof Korea in 1910 to the liberation of 1945. I particularly focus on how Luxunwas accepted by Pro-Japanese Liguangzhu, the left-wing writer Hanxueye andpoet Lilushi, and also the effects that Luxun had on their own ideas and worldof literature.During this time both Korea and China was basis of the entire valuesystem which is enduring tradition was the old order of social relations basedon lagging Feudalism and Confucianism, which had been the official ideology,shared the mutual sympathy of having to fight against the invasion ofimperialism in their common historical background. It can be regarded ascultural phenomenon that Korean writer's attention was paid to Luxun whorepresenting Chinese literary society, was awakening Chinese soul tomodernize China through the power of pen. According to the historicalevidence of 'Luxun Diary' and 'Zhouzuoren Diary' there were six Koreanswho met and communicated with Luxun. Regarding Luxun's enlightenmentliterature and his indomitable resistance against injustice and oppressionwould act as a good catalyst to awake the Koreans who were living in colonialperiod. They therefore translated six of Luxun's works which includes'Lunatic Diary', 'The true story of Ah Q', 'Home Town' etc. The Japaneseimperialists specified Luxun's works as banned books because his workswould instill Koreans' anti-Japanese spirit. It is possible to identify that Luxunhad a considerable impact in colonial Korea.Opening Korea's modern literature, Liguangzhu, who is considered thevery first and notable writer but who has the limitations of being Pro-Japanese,is a typical writer who accepts Luxun in a negative, superficial and a twistedway. Liguangzhu accepted Luxun's enlightment theory and his notion ofremodeling the nation's character. However, Liguangzhu committed an anti-nationalistic error by suggesting that Korea should improve by means ofaccepting Japan's developed colonial rule rather than through nationalillumination.Hanxueye, a member of KAPF, (Korea Left-wing Literature Association),drew the honest life of working class which is against Japan's exploitativecapitalism in a realistic way in Korea.In the process of accepting Luxun in colonial Korea, poet Lilushi wasprobably the most positive and appropriate in accepting Luxun. Lilushi andLuxun's interaction is achieved three dimensionally and with variety, from theencounter to grief and translation of works.In colonial Korea, the process of Luxun's ideas and works beingtranslated by patriotic nationalists and being accepted and re-created byKorean authors not only to grasp how the literary skills of configuration andtransformation was reconstructed but also to understand the process ofmodernization of North-East Asia, which was constructing modern racialcountry through struggling against Japanese imperialist and reformingnational characters by enlightenment.
