One of basic personality traits, Extroversion and introversion , is strongly associated with aggression and may moderate individual responses to aggressive picture. The study used event-related potential (ERP) to test whether individual differences in brain cortical reactivity to aggressive picture are correlated with extraversion or introversion in healthy adults. In this study, ERPs were recorded from 14 extravert, 14 introvert and 14 moderate between extravert and introvert participants, who were selected from 200 college students according to the scores in extraversion and neuroticism of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ). 42 participants were presented three types of picture of attacker and victims of attack and neutral. In all subjects, the three kinds of pictures elicited obvious late potentials in the picture perception paradigm, which can begin at about 300ms after onset and may be sustained to 750ms. From 300ms to 750ms, picture of attacker and victims of attack elicited larger amplitudes as compared to neutral in all subjects at Fz, FP1, FP2, T7, T8, TP7, TP8 sites , and picture of attacker elicited larger amplitudes as compared to victims of attack. Furthermore, a significant main effect in personality was found between extravert and introvert subjects when watching different pictures: introvert subjects elicited larger amplitudes as compared with extravert subjects when watching picture of attacker, extravert subjects elicited larger amplitudes as compared with introvert subjects when watching picture of victims of attack. The results also indicated, there were differences of brain cortical responses among different types of aggressive pictures, and individual with different levels of extraversionhas different brain cortical responses to aggressive pictures. In the ERP study of aggressive, the sustained positivity may reflect motivational engagement and a commitment of attentional resources to the picture viewing task. It supported the view that there were probably relationship between aggressive and extraversion. Furthermore, the difference of the responses to aggressive pictures between extravert and introvert individuals can be reflected by event-related potentials. The results also approved that the frontal lobe and the temporal lobe are closely correlated with emotional processing of extraversion individuals which may be right-hemisphere lateral.
