In recalling the history of western paintings' propagating in China, the regression of classicism in 1980 and its evolving phenomena in 1990s, the present thesis expatiate several kinds of expansion trends of classicism and realism paintings. As we all know that the more rich and extensive the art tradition is, the easier it can be evolved. At the turn of the century, under the influence of "postmodernist" culture, partial classicism and realism paintings take off the guise of tradition, and at the same time they gradually integrate with the concept of postmodernism and the market elements, and therefore unfold his gesture developing into margin. This paper has made an analysis of the features, conceptions, background of classical-realism oil paintings in China, as well as conditions for development of it, exerting a special emphasize on the distinction between the classical-realism and what in the past, the classicalism and the realism. Meanwhile, the paper deals with a discussion of a few pairs of art and culture problems caused by the classical-realism style, such as the problems concerning the classical-realists and new academic school, the classical-realism and concrete expressionism, and the elite culture and mass culture. The key feature of the "new epic" arts, a notion includes oil painting, is that it gradually turns to diversified ideas and means to practice. The wind of classical art that rose in the late 1980s seems to have silenced, so has been gone the hot debates and quarrels with it. Nowadays, however, people can still feel and see in some of contemporary paintings the flag that stood in the end of last century. People can also feel the efforts by a lot of painters to defend the traditional expression with classical and realism language and to develop it by integrate their own style with the "post-modernism" and"concrete expressionism" elements, in a culture system oriented to the mass population, and consuming market. "The wind come and the wind gone, the wind hasn't taken anything away." This sentence might be a proper conclusion of the classical-realism oil painters, the intellectuals of a new generation.
