A common thread in the appreciation of art has weaved through humanity's long history and development, from ancient times to the present day. That thread is what some scholars'term"golden mean theory,"which is titled divine proportion. The"golden mean theory"initially originated from geometry, and has brought far-reaching influence upon the appreciation of aesthetics in the fields of style, architecture, and painting, as well as to many academic subjects, including science. It also exists in the field of music, like an invisible hand, controlling people's appreciation of beauty.The golden mean is evident in our lives. It exists in each and every aspect of nature. The beautiful spiral of the conch, the intricate petal arrangement of a flower, the steady rate of the human body's heartbeat, even the unique size and structure of the DNA chain that makes every living thing, all adhere to the golden mean. The golden mean exists not only in art, architecture, and music, but also in areas of economics, astronomy, and religion. The focus of this study looks at the relationship between the tendency which was found in music and the golden mean, particularly the application of the golden mean in the composition of music, and analyzes the golden mean that exists in masterpieces, a result of meticulous efforts musicians have made since ancient times. This thesis demonstrates the use of the golden mean as the magic weapon with which many famous musicians made their works fresh and alluring every time. However, the golden mean is not the only reference point for the appreciation of beauty.This research started from art appreciation mentality,based upon many studies on the subject, especially on application of golden section in art study. This art drew support from the outcome of golden mean in mathematic. Through the analysis of a wide selection of music samples, this thesis proves the existence and role of the golden mean in music. In conclusion, this thesis clarifies the rational support of the theory of golden mean in the creation of music, proposing the golden mean as a tool for the modern musician to create works of music.
