According to fifth census in 2000,the total population of Kazakh in our country is 1.2505 million and mainly distributes in northern part of Xinjiang which include Ili Kazakh autonomous prefecture, Qoqek and Altay, others are Mori Kazak autonomous county, Barkol Kazak autonomous county which are in the eastern part of Xinjiang as well as small groups in Aksay Kazak autonomous county of Gansu province and Haixi Mongol and Tibet autonomous prefecture. This thesis focuses on Kazaks in Xinjiang province to elaborate the changes of their marriage and family.This thesis begin with the formation, marriage and customs of family to elaborate the changes on marriage and family of Kazaks in Xinjiang since the founding of PRC.A contrast is also made to arise attention on problems and situation in marriage and family of present Kazak, both internal and external factors are analyzed for these changes. As for some of these existing backward customs and undesirable tendency, proper solutions are proposed.This thesis is divided into three parts, foreword, main body and the conclusion. Reserch significance, survey, research technique and the innovation is introduced in the foreword.The first chapter "The changes on family formation and function of Kazaks" is mainly concerned with two subjects which are "the changes of Kazak family formation and asset assignment" and "the changes of family birth function".The second chapter "The changes on family and marriage of Kazaks" includes three sections: the changes on way of marriage between pasture and urban Kazaks, the changes of conception on divorce and remarriage among pasture and urban kazaks and the changes on situation of marriage with other ethnic groups. Especially according to the elaboration of way of marriage, the standard of selecting a spouse and average age of the first marriage, comparison on conceptions and culture of marriage among kazaks in Xinjiang is made. In addition, kazak ancient systems of "ex-clan marriage" and "Levirate ".The third chapter "The changes of kazak family customs" includes three sections:The changes of family celebration, the changes of family customs and several marriage celebration problems. The thesis also make a detailed comparison on customs before and past liberation, such as marriage customs, circumcision, wearing the earring, adopting grandchildren and adoption,and the reasons of these changes are also analyzed. In section of "several marriage celebration problems", the emerging problems and new situations in present Kazak marriage customs are also discussed as well as the existence of some harmful old customs, for example, "khalingraal," (high quota bride price) problem, solutions are tried to be proposed.The conclusion part makes a general analysis on changes of kazak marriage and family in Xinjiang since the founding of PRC, and summarize the characteristics of these changes.
