Atlas and Annals of Overseas Countries, written by the great thinker Wei Yuan ,is generally considered as a book about overseas countries' history and geography and for that reason more research is done in the two fields while little is found in its language .This paper focuses on the words about foreign relationships and new words in this book.This paper comprises four parts :I Introduction; II the background information about Atlas and Annals of Overseas Countries; III the research on the words about foreign relationships in Atlas and Annals of Overseas Countries; IV the research on he new words in Atlas and Annals of Overseas Countries.Philological studies is made on the words about foreign relationships and some errors are corrected .Four characteristics of words about foreign affairs are as follows: 1) the words used to refer foreigners or countries often have negative meaning ;2)the words given to explain why some foreign countries are advanced are such as five elements and destiny;3)the words used to introduce the system of democracy are full of tradition that is easy to understand ;4)to prove his theories WeiYuan quotes words from ancient books so that to make the peple believe those brought in by the westerns are already in existence in ancient China .In the part of new words philological studies are also made and some errors are also corrected .The characteristics of new words in it are : 1) transliteration is widely used that is because language is restricted by thought; 2)some new words are disappeared which is the result of the assimilation ;3 ) the pronunciations of the words of transliteration are far from the original ones is due to the pidgin ;4) the characters used in the new words at the beginning are random but lastly the characters which are neutrality are chosen ;5)the new words that have too more syllables fall into disuse ,which is the result of the restriction of rhythm of Chinese language...
