This thesis is based on a questionnaire investigation of a group of 30 non-English majors in a natural college English class. The questions are connected with the learners' cognitive and affective aspects in the process of reading. Through the analysis of their answers, it can be found that many problems, difficulties and incorrect knowledge of reading exist in the learners' reading process. The majority of the learners think of reading as a simple process of decoding the symbol. Against the false idea that reading and understanding well come mainly from looking up the dictionary, the thesis will examine some aspects that can influence the learners' reading. Reading is involved with linguistic, psychological, social and cultural knowledge. It is the result of those aspects working together. The purpose of this thesis is to find out what factors will influence the learners' reading achievements and provide some guides of teaching for the instructor to design the reading class.
