The motivation for a foreign language learning is one of psychological factors that affects a foreign language learning. This thesis has an comparative and contrastive analysis of the affecting factors of polytechnic students' motivation for a foreign language learning, adopting both the qualitative research and quantitative research methods by asking students to fill out the questionnaire, observing their studying behaviors, making research experiments and analyzing the data of investigation. This study attempts to answer three questions as follows: (l)What type is the polytechnic students' motivation for a foreign language learning and how do the demographic features have the effect on motivational intensity? (2)What are the main affecting factors that influence polytechnic students' motivation for a foreign language learning? (3) How does the higher motivation (examination) affect students' achievement of a foreign language learning ?The result shows that most polytechnic students' motivation is instrumental, and different sexes, years in college, English proficiency and family backgrounds have different effects on motivational intensity. And it has been found that the orders of affecting factors of motivational behaviors that affect three types of students are different, but they have generalities, which focus on time management strategy, self-control behaviors ,perseverance, learning purpose, anxiety and learning strategy. The result also indicates that higher motivational intensity (examination) can facilitate students' achievement of a foreign language learning.Based on the investigation and teaching practice, the thesis puts forward some suggestions as to how to initiate and sustain the motivation for English learning . Meanwhile, it has made suggestions aiming at foreign language education and classroom teaching in an effort to improve students' achievement of a foreign language learning.
