As one of the categories of the study on the mental outlook in ancient Chinese literary theories, the concept of the silence ambit was firstly brought forward from the point of view of epistemology even before the Qin Dynasty, but ever since then it has produced the far-reaching influence on ancient Chinese art as a kind of aesthetic attitudes. The concept of the silence ambit can be analyzed at three levels, that is, the peaceful state of mind, the emptiness quality and the dynamic state of mind. Psychologically similar to aesthetic experience and diversion, the dynamic aspect of this concept appears as the conflicts and mixture between the temporary lost of external language and the active play of internal language (thinking activities). Traditionally, since the epistemological interpretation proposed by Zhuangzi, the famous scholar of Taoism, in the pre-Qin days, the connotation of the concept of the silence ambit has already comprised the dialectic thinking that the emptiness quality of spiritual appreciation and the real world are combined together and that dynamic and peaceful states of mind are mutually promoted. The silence ambit have been much discussed by our predecessors while the implied content of the dynamic state has not been elaborated in detail and developed in an all-round way, which makes the concept regarded as the present of a peaceful state. This dissertation will survey and interpret the dynamic character of modern concept of silence ambit from the following three angles of view including aesthetic attitude, artistic attitude and appreciative attitude with reference to literary psychology and aesthetics in China and western countries.
