| The translation of soft news plays an indispensable role in the process of China's opening to the outside world. The value of soft news lies in the fact that it covers all aspects of Chinese culture with human-interest treatment, which makes it excellent in intercultural communication. However, due to cultural and geographical differences, the original texts of external soft news, containing too many Chinese features, are sometimes unintelligible to Westerners. This article, based on the fundamental theory of semiotics, tries to explore the nature of soft news translation and generalize some practical translation methods exclusively for its translation and evaluation. At the beginning of this thesis, Chapter One, traditional translation-related studies are reviewed and the reasons why they are inappropriate to guide and evaluate soft news translation are discussed. In Chapter Two the distinctive features of soft news are analyzed and problems faced with are listed. Some basic concepts of semiotics, including denotation, connotation and myth, are presented in Chapter Three. The translation process, the essence of the paper, is fully discussed in Chapter Four and Five. By dividing the whole process into two main steps, decoding and encoding, the nature of soft news translation is clearly disclosed and techniques come out as a result. |
