A Multi-dimensional Study Of Translators' Subjectivity In Rendering Chinese Poetry Into English

The paper attempts to integrate the recognition of the translator's subjectivity with poetry translation on the basis of analysis of fundamental translation theories, and tries to probe, from aesthetic, linguistic and cultural perspectives, into the inevitability of the translator's subjectivity in rendering Chinese poetry into English. With relevant theories, it elaborates the topic respectively from objective and subjective aspects step by step in order to clarify some controversial opinions on this issue and to help foreground its instructional significance.The innovation of the thesis lies in combination between the study on the translator's subjectivity and a special vehicle which possesses the uniqueness of the beauty in sound, form and meaning—Chinese poetry translation. On the one hand, guided by a series of theories such as the indeterminacy or fuzziness of the source text, the selection of the translation strategy, the transfer between content and form as well as the positive effects of the constraints in translation, the author carries on a comprehensive study on the establishment of the translator's subjectivity. On the other hand, on the theoretical basis of linguistics, traditional aesthetics, reception aesthetics and the diversity of culture, the author makes a dimensional study to embody the translator's subjectivity. All of these will, the author hopes, have a positive impact on the contemporary theoretical study of translation and translation practice.This paper falls into seven chapters.Chapter one is a brief generalization of several issues in translation, including definitions on translation and translator, traditional translation theory and criteria, and the change of the translator's status from invisibility to visibility, from which the author starts the analysis of the controversial issue—the translator's subjectivity.To emphasize the practicalness and necessity of studying the translator's subjectivity, the author points out that translation is not merely language transfer or information transfer, but a cross-cultural communication as well as the re-creation of aesthetic features in the source text, which requires to a great extent the translator's initiative and creativity.
