Shiganaoya, the famous Japanese writer, devoted his 17-year painstaking effort to achieving the great work"Anyakoro". The novel tells how Tokitokensaku, the leading character to spiritually go through agonies caused by sexually immoral deeds of his female relatives.Using the social gender theory, this thesis renewedly analyzes the neoteric Japanese literature work"Anyakoro". Through researching on the content of the novel, the thesis conducts its specific research on social gender. From 1980s, Japanese literature researchers have begun to do research on literary works together with sociology. This method was unprecedented on that time. Sociology upholds personality liberation, removes common customs shackle, praises the rights of personality self-approving and choosing, and sparks plug gender free. Patriarchy should be eliminated from our mind. The traditional idea that men took charge of the outside affairs while women took charge of family works is really the main constriction to liberate women from patriarchic society and realize gender free. So, this the main topic discussed in this thesis. And the following thought is the general summary of this thesis. It can be seen from the title that"Appraisal of"Anyakoro"from the perspective of gender", the thesis was conducted from the perspective of gender free. In term of the definition of social gender, there are many scholars who have made many explanations, but this thesis adopted the up to date definition put forward by ProfessorYitianxinxiong. Centering on personality liberation, gender free tells people to get rid of trammels of traditional values and acknowledge their personal value and rights to choose. According to this conception, both of sexes should set themselves free from gender stereotype and do away with the shallow idea of gender role division. The conception also tells male and female to strive to realize their personal value although they have to face conventional assumption that man is superior to woman. Besides, gender freedom encourages both sexes to set themselves free from sexual suppression and to fully develop their personality while giving emphasis to gender equality. As a socially inferior sex, woman cannot escape judgment by double moral standard. Unfortunately, she accepts this kind of standard and even uses it to restrict her own minds and behavior. As a result, her personality is oppressed and her rights to pursue love are taken away. Man, as a socially superior sex, seems to have privileges compared with woman. But these privileges are likely to become hurdle of man's development and make man lose more rights and freedom. People tend to consider woman's sexually immoral deeds as unforgivable and usually criticize them severely. At this time, they often forget woman, like man, has the rights to pursue happiness and sexual freedom. This thesis focuses on five characters of the novel, Tokitokensaku, his mother, his wife Naoko, Eihana and Sei. Immoral deeds committed by Tokitokensaku's mother and wife make significant influences on him. From the perspective of gender free, the thesis aims to reveal the restrictions that patriarchy imposes on people's minds and behaviors in Minji era, by digging into both sexes'social status depicted in the novel.
