The present paper discusses the translation strategies of the English-Chinese translation in China in the context of the May Fourth Movement. It consists of three chapters excluding the introduction and conclusion. Chapter One is a fairly thorough study of the two terms domestication and foreignization, in which it is suggested that the two strategies are not incompatible but complementary. In Chapter Two, a study on the development of translation strategies in China is carried out. Representatives of each strategy are introduced and illustrated by their translation practice. Their influences on the construction of China's own literature after the May Fourth Movement are revealed.Chapter Three goes further to explore the factors determining the choice of domestication and foreignization in that period. These factors are the purpose of translation, the readership, the position of the translated literature, the translator's cultural attitude and ideology. It shows that the choices made by the translators then are the result of the interplay of the translators' attitudes and the historical, cultural and social conditions. The strength and limitations of the present research are briefly presented in Conclusion.
