| English song translation, related to music, translation, literature and the like, involves unique artistic work. Based on the features of English songs, the present thesis attempts to apply Nida's functional equivalence theory to English song translation by putting forward three principles of equivalence. The three principles are equally important and should be regarded as a whole to guide English song translation. They are the principles of semantic equivalence, stylistic equivalence and cultural equivalence.English song translation, a special work of art, interwoven with a comprehensive study of music, translation and literature, places much emphasis on the relationship between music knowledge and translation.The present thesis is composed of seven chapters in all. In addition to this section of introduction, the body consists of five chapters, exclusive of conclusion. Chapter two, the first part of the body, deals with features and classification of English song. Chapter three is mainly devoted to English song title and its translation. In chapter four, rhetorical devices will be summed up. In chapter five, the present author attempts to propose some translation procedures for rendering English songs into Chinese. In chapter six, the present author illustrates frequently-emerged mistakes and offers countermeasures.
