An Investigation On The Nomination Of The Newly

Nomination, is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a cultural phenomenon. As a kind of social language, it should be included in our researching scope in order to make it noticed and standardized. From the viewpoint of language and culture, this paper researches the 5,251 names of newly-built residential buildings in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou cities adopting the quantitative and qualitative analytic methods. The general content of the paper will focus on the five following aspects: the number of Chinese characters, generic names, specific names, the integral structure and meaning, and some problems existing in nomination. The chapter of the number of words will carry on the statistics on the general distributive situation to all the residential buildings with different Chinese characters of the three places and the analysis to its statistical result. The part of generic names will study these five aspects specifically: the overall distribution of different generic names, the correlative relationship between Chinese characters and generic names, the concrete manifestation of the bisyllablization tendency of monosyllable generic names in the residential buildings in the three cities, the characteristic in rhythmic collocation of the double-syllable generic names, and the diverse developing tendency of the generic names. The part of specific names will study these four aspects specifically: the characteristics in selecting words of specific names, its semantic analysis, the characteristic in rhythmic collocation of the specific names and the figure of speeches adopted in some specific names. The chapter on the integral structure and meaning will carry on an analysis to the structures of names with different Chinese characters, classify of all the residential buildings in the three cities, and summarize the different characteristics in nomination of the three cities. On this foundation, the paper analyzes and evaluates some problems existing in the selection and application of some generic names and specific names. Besides, we will put forward some suggestions on the nomination of built-to-be residential buildings.
