The communicative nature of language determines that constructing harmonious teacher-student relationship is much more important in FLT than in other subjects. The aim of foreign language teaching is cultivating learners' communicative competence in the target language. With the belief that language output can increase the accuracy and fluency of language expression, and then increase language communicative competence, this thesis intends to explore the significance of harmonious teacher-student relationship in promoting learners' language output in teaching, and tries to find out the ways of establishing a favourable teacher-student relationship.The writer firstly reviews the literature on teacher-student relationship, communicative competence and some relevant theories of second language acquisition, in which the inter-relationship among them is explored and the theoretical background for the following discussion is formed. A survey is then carried out among 120 non-English major students who are from 4 classes in grade two in Southwest University in Chongqing. With the data analysis of the questionnaires, it is found that the degree of harmonious teacher-student relationship does have effects on their learning performance and language output. Based on the literature review and the research, the following findings are obtained: (1) Students' attitude towards a teacher and his or her lesson is closely related to the teacher's charm of personality. (2) Students' learning performance is closely related to the level of the harmonious relationship between the teacher and the students. (3) A good teacher-student relationship is more important to those slow students than to those excellent students. (4) At present, most FL teachers are not good at communicating with their students, or do not pay enough attention to it. There is still a large room for them to improve.At last, the thesis provides some suggestions on how to improve teacher-student relationship: (1) Shifting the belief of the teacher's. (2) Improving teacher's charm of personality. (3) Adopting suitable words in judging and evaluating. (4) Designing proper language tasks to offer students opportunities for success. (5) Creating cooperative learning environment. (6) Empathy.The conclusion is that: (1) Harmonious T-S relationship arouses learners' learning interest. (2) Harmonious T-S relationship promotes learners' self-confidence. (3) Harmonious T-S relationship promotes language output. (4) Harmonious T-S relationship achieves learner autonomy and self-developmentIn all, language teaching is the process of co-operation between teachers and students. A good teacher-student relationship will play a more and more important role in FL education. When we have a good teacher-student relationship, we will achieve our teaching goal smoothly.
