Elfriede Jelinik is a renowned Austrian woman writer in German literary circle. However, Jelinek is a highly controversial figure in her motherland. She won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature by her remarkable work Die Klavierspielerin (The Piano Teacher). Jelinek is not only the tenth woman writer, but also the twelfth German writer in history who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Moreover, she is the first writer in Austria who has been awarded the honor. The novel Gier was published in 2000. Since the study at home and abroad focus on her masterpiece Die Klavierspielerin and her other controversial works, there're no theses on Gier. As a matter of fact, Gier embodies obviously most motifs in her previous novels, and it is the reason why I make up my mind to write this thesis. This thesis deals with Gier by means of methods of narratology and relevant theories of ecofeminism. The whole thesis is composed of five parts. The introduction part gives a brief account of the author's life, writing accomplishments, the main idea of Gier, and the current research state of Gier at home and abroad. Chapter I is mainly devoted to the study of narrative structure. The novel adopts the complex reciprocating endocentric. And the use of active narrating subjects helps to enhance its artistic charm. Chapter II aims to elucidate the tokens in the novel. Chapter III attempts to study the characteristics of the language. Jelinek doesn't pay much attention to content, but puts great effort into wording. Free direct speech, metaphor, sarcasm and image are frequently employed in the novel. The last part, conclusion, presents the conclusions and clarifies that it is an anti-folkloristic novel.
