| Ci is a new type of Yuefu lyric rhythm poem, which was rooted in yanyue in the Sui Dynasty and sprouted from Quzi ci created by the people of the Tang Dynasty. It was developed in the Five Dynasties and prospered in the Two Song Dynasties. Inherenting from Yanyue's new rhythms, Ci shows its attractive musical charm among which the amusement function is very important. This function is reflected in the Southern Tang Dynasty's Preminister Feng Yansi's idea regarding Ci as a literatary tool to"entertain people". It is also reflected in Ou Yangxiu's Xi hu nian yu---As using the old words and tuned with new melodies, Ci can entertain people and disport oneself. The amusement function is the obvious feature of Ci to distinguish traditional poems.During the development from the Late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties to the Southern Song Dynasty, although the amusement function is the definite character of Ci, its expressiveness and strength is quite different. For example, as the living style of the folks in the Late Tang Dynasty are unsophisticated so the Dunhuang Quzi Ci was created; The emperors and the ministers of the Five Dynasty indulged in creature comforts and the Huajian Ci which is to describe the beautiful girls and love appeared; in the prosperous Northern Song Dynasty, the emperors advocated feast so Du shi yu le Ci which describes the luxurious urban situations and lives was emerged; In the Late Song Dynasty, lots of literary men was involved in the Clique Fights and banished from the court and went to the countryside to comfort themselves. Therefore Shan shui tian yuan Ci occurred; In the crazy and decling Southern Song Dynasty, the scholars had no way to contribute to the society so they used pai xie Ci to relief their life. This thesis tries to state the historical appearance of the amusement fuctions of Tangsong Ci and the reasons in order to have a further understanding of the prosperity and decline of Ci as well as explore its rules of development.
