With the coming of the 21st century, the college English teaching has faced several problems: the first, with the entrance to WTO and Beijing as the host of 2008 Olympic game, our country has frequently interaction with the outside world, and people with international talents, specific knowledge and ability of application of English are urgently needed. Foreign languages teaching, especially English teaching is challenged with the new demands. The second, although the college English teaching has already achieved a lot of achievements, and level of English of graduates has improved a lot, they have a poor ability of application of English. The facts of"deaf English"and"dump English"have widely existed in English studying, and students take quite a lot of time to learn English, but with little efficiency. The purpose of English teaching is to cultivate students the ability to pass the examinations. The last, courses offered, compared with several ten years ago, almost stands still,whereas the contents and methods of teaching are quite out of date. Graduates have developed an acute sense of disappointment on English studying. In order to solve these problems, the education department has launched a campaign of reformation of college English teaching. And on the basis of it, the reformation on examination of CET4, CET6 has been conducted. The aims are to improve the quality of English teaching overall, to enhance graduates'ability of application of English. So, the qualified graduates can be trained.This paper discusses on the developing trend in a further way after analysis and study about the problems in our college English teaching system in our colleges after the reformation of CET4 and CET6. Then the Writer raises a design for reformation on English teaching in colleges, so that our English teaching will help our students improve their all-around qualities and promote their development uninterrupted.This thesis can be divided into three parts:In the first part, the writer tells the causes and side effects of CET4 and CET6. After analyzing the significance and role of CET4 and CET6 on our English teaching, the writer raises the side effects of CET4 and CET6 on our English teaching, thus, expounding the necessary to reform our English teaching in the colleges.In the second part, the writer analyses and evaluates the English teaching in the colleges after the reformation of CET4 and CET6, particularizing the problems in present English teaching: course offered, teaching pattern, teaching evaluation, etc. The paper emphasizes on course offered and teaching model, accordingly, clarifying the essentiality and necessity of English teaching reformation.In the third part, the writer illustrates concretely the design for English teaching reformation. After analyzing the situations for English teaching reformation, the writer puts forward the material strategies: regenerating the teaching program and courses, innovating the teaching model and teaching evaluation. Among all of those strategies, innovating the teaching pattern and course offered plays an important role in the whole English teaching reformation.
