With the advent of 1970s, feminism boomed in the west. The field of gender and language is under quick development, gaining more and more attention. Linguists, anthropologists, socialists, even psychologists notice the difference between gender in daily English communication and try to seek explanations hidden behind from different perspectives. Among many explanations, the Dominance Approach and the Difference Approach are most noticeable. The first is represented by a renowned linguist Rabin Lacoff who attributes females' language characteristics in daily communication to their subordinate social status, while the latter completely denies the former and seeks explanations totally from different sub-culture between male and female. To give a more complete and intact explanation, it's necessary to combine them.In order to make language learners better understand the society, culture and history of the English-speaking countries, the author of this paper analyzes gender difference objectively, explores reasons hidden behind and present how to do deal with gender difference. The author aims at:1.Make a through and systematic analysis of gender difference in daily English communication. Discuss gender difference in speech style and conversational level, quoting affluent examples and studies to support.2.Try to give a more complete and intact explanation on how gender difference comes into being by combining the above two approaches. This paper attempts to explore deeper reasons in historical and sub-cultural factors.3.Summarize misunderstandings and miscommunications in cross-gendercommunication, give tips on how to achieve effective communication and give language learners a chance to gain a deeper understanding of the second language.
