This paper probes into concerned problems existing in English teaching. It makes careful investigations on the following four aspects including the source of students, teaching contents, teaching methods and teaching evaluation. Through analyzing the samples, the author finds that the main problems lie in the complexity in enrollment, poor foundations of the students; unreasonable diversities of the English teaching materials ; lack of overall planning ; out-of-date teaching methodologies; teacher-centered teaching; lack of scientific evaluation and simple testing method. In order to solve these problems, the author points out the necessity and urgency for English grade teaching, and theoretically inquires into its feasibility from the perspective of linguistics theories, psychology, economy and education. On the basis of this, the author puts forwards some concrete suggestions and measures as to how to carry out English grade teaching. First, we should decide on a suitable grading method. Second, establish different teaching goals, teaching contents and teaching evaluation methods for different levels of students. Third, see that sound teaching management is enhanced. In this article, the author also makes study on the experiment of the English grade teaching conducted for the students of Grade 2004 in the Economy and Management Department of Hunan Mass Media Vocational and Technology College. The results of the collected data and statistics show that English grade teaching, which aims at resolving the problems existing in English teaching in higher vocational and technical education, is one of the effective ways to increase our teaching quality.
