| Being one of the main common compulsory courses in highervocational and technical colleges, the public English is taught as aninternational current language used to communicate in many scientificfields and it plays important parts in the students' further study, theirall-around development and the improvement on their applied capabilityin English. But so many problems are in existence in current publicEnglish teaching in higher vocational and technical colleges that it isnecessary to lucubrate these problems and the countermeasures againstthem for the purpose of promoting the reform of the public Englishteaching in higher vocational and technical colleges, improving thequality of vocational English teaching and realizing the goal ofcultivating applied specialized talents with high qualities and high skills.Focusing on a series of current problems in the public Englishteaching in higher vocational and technical colleges the author has asystemic study on the public English teaching in higher vocational andtechnical colleges using relative theories such as theory of instruction andcurriculum, theory of higher education, theory of psychology and theoryof linguistics. Firstly the author presents theoretic analysis of the meaningof the public English teaching in higher vocational and technical colleges,its characteristics different from those of the public English in generalcolleges and universities and some of its special educational principles.And then the author analyses the current status of the public Englishteaching in higher vocational and technical colleges and the reasons forits existing problems by cleaning up the collected data and by means ofsurvey and interviews on the spot. Finally the author makes a study ofsome countermeasures against the problems such as the students' low andirregular English level, their lack of enthusiasm to study, the old teachingmethods, the out-of-date teaching ideas, the overabundance of the teaching content and its lack of vocational characteristics, the singleevaluation and the shortage of the teachers' qualities. Hence somemeasures and suggestions to reform the public English teaching in highervocational and technical colleges are put forward mainly focusing on thefollowing five aspects, namely: the transformation of the teaching ideas,the careful selection of the teaching content, the improvement in theteaching methods, the perfection of the teaching evaluation and thepromotion of the teachers' teaching skills. This research has practical andtheoretical significance to a certain extent in solving the problems in thepublic English teaching in higher vocational and technical colleges and italso has reference value for the future study. |
