On The Study Of Elegy In Han-wei And Six Dynasties

Elegy was meant for the funeral in the form of singing songs in the beginning. Afterwards, successive scholars adapted and developed it into a special poetry style, the process of which almost took a thousand years. Simplicity is typical of elegy, which enables it to get rid of complex and misunderstanding. Usually used in the funeral scene, elegy appears more poignant, thus making it have a trail of tragedy.From the Wei and Jin period (a period in Chinese history) onwards, Creating elegy seemed to become a major concern for a while. " Selected Works "(made by Xiao Tong in South Dynasty Liang Period) can serve as a typical example, in which elegy was separated as a category in volume 28th. Elegy creation after Wei Jin this dynasty became prosperous while it is no accident. The wartime and destruction caused by it brought about the popularity of elegy for scholars also put themselves in others' shoes, feeling that it's hard for them to making a living, let alone build up their own careers, which gave rise to the popularity of elegy. So the elegy embodied a chilly and affable melody with hidden bitterness the dismal trail, by which means scholars expressed their depression, which was conceivable.After scholars' trial and error, Elegy in the Wei and Jin Dynasties became a mature poetry style. My paper is divided into four parts, with then social background and academic atmosphere, and in the light of other literary style, to elaborate and confirm the development of Elegy, meant to outline and review the trend of Elegy over a long period of time.This paper discussed in the first part about the Elegy in pre-Qin period. During this period there has been a primitive form of elegy. However, some facts can't stand being examined for the time and limited reference. Master Ren (Ren Bandang)Viewed the elegy in this period to be more audio than visual ( attach importance to the sounds rather than lyrics). The second part elaborates the Western Han Dynasty to the Wei Jin period of elegy development. As far as I am concerned, famous writers had took part in the action of producing poem Elegy in this period; Regarding its form, Elegy has changed from the mixed-word to the five-word body which eventually became the main form of Elegy. The third part we will discuss the new changes of the Elegy in the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This period saw a further development of Elegy, and there were two kinds of Elegy then , one of which was named Elegy for oneself and another named Elegy for others . Elegy for oneself won itself a tremendous success while Elegy for others grew into a stereotype model of creation for the generations to come.
