This study is principally conducted to probe into Chinese college students' high-frequency vocabulary knowledge. Both receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge was studied. Moreover, the study also made an attempt to explore the subject's in-depth vocabulary knowledge. In order to fit the particular situation of Chinese university English learners, three tests were designed particularly for the assessing of the specific target words in this study, namely the VLT, the controlled productive version of VLT, and the DVK format.Another attempt was made to investigate the subject's vocabulary learning strategies and the role the teacher has played concerning the establishing of the subject's vocabulary learning strategies. For this purpose, a simplified questionnaire was derived from previous researches and adopted in this study. The results from data analysis indicated that the subjects have further room to improve their high-frequency vocabulary knowledge, among which the productive knowledge, the collocation aspect need most attention. It is also implied that the teacher has played a role not influential enough in the student's establishing of his/her vocabulary learning strategies.
