In this paper, the writer addresses the retranslation phenomena in multidimensional perspectives, with a view to seeing why we should retranslate and what criteria we should hold towards retranslation. Meanwhile, a framework of criticism within which the possibility and necessity of retranslating Rebecca is substantiated is built.By delving into the theory of Hermeneutics, the three-word translation criteria-faithfulness, expressiveness and closeness and the perspective transferring of translators, the author of this thesis tries to focus on the necessity for the development of retranslation and argue that multidimensional approaches should be adopted in the retranslation of literary classics.Besides, text comparisons of retranslations of Rebecca are carried out with the aid of modern literary theories, such as point of view and portrayal of characters and plot. And the tentative study would also be of help to the objective retranslation criticism.Being a tentative study of English retranslation, faults and weaknesses can by no means be avoided; so hopefully, the author of the thesis could be remedied and corrected in future studies.
