Ever since China adopted the reform and opening up policy in 1979, foreign films and TV series have been flooding into China and they have held a very important position in the cultural exchanges with foreign countries. This has resulted in the new translation area—audiovisual translation. Comparatively speaking, audiovisual translation is less studied both at home and abroad. The few papers that do discuss audiovisual translation provide us with no systematic and comprehensive translation theory to guide E-C audiovisual translation. The first part introduces the present situation of study of E-C audiovisual translation, the history of audiovisual translation and the significance of this thesis. Then the thesis deals with the definition and classification of audiovisual translation and analyzes its six characteristics and three constraints. The author uses Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory along with different cultural background in audiovisual media to guide the practice and sums up some feasible strategies that can be applied to different situations in the process of audiovisual translation in order to produce audiovisual translation with high quality. The translator's role in the audiovisual translation activity is also discussed. At last, the author introduces the limitation of present study and makes suggestions for future study.
