This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The translation practice material is selected from Audiovisual Translation:Subtitling. This is a book on translation studies published by Routledge in 2014 and completed by two scholars,Jorge Diaz Cintas and Aline Remael. It is an introductory subtitling textbook. The book contains a total of eleven chapters, which elaborate on subtitling in terms of subtitle classification, professional environment, semiotics, linguistics, and technical issues and involve the whole process of subtitling. This translation material is selected from chapters 3 and 4.Chapter 3 deals with the semiotics of subtitling(including subtitles and images for movie texts).Chapter 4 deals with technical considerations(including subtitles, time dimensions, space dimensions, etc.)This report consists of five parts. The first part is a brief introduction of this translation task.It includes background of the translation project, objective of the project, features of the project and structure of the report. The second part is translation process description. It includes tools used in the translation practice, analysis on parallel text, quality control, comprehension and expression in the process of translation and management after translation. The third part is an introduction of theory applied in the translation practice. It includes a brief introduction to semantic translation and communicative translation and application of the theory in the translation process. The forth part is case analysis under the guidance of translation strategy. It includes difficulties in the process of translation and translation strategies used under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation. The fifth part is conclusion of the translation practice, including the retrospection and reflection of the translation practice and unsolved problems of the translation practice. This translation practice is based on the theory of semantic translation and communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark.According to the characteristics of textbooks that belong to informative text, the writer used the translation strategies of semantic translation and communicative translation and chose the appropriate translation skills in the translation process to convey the information of the source text faithfully and correctly and to make the target reader understand the process of subtitling clearly.Through this translation practice, the writer realized that the translator should choose appropriate translation theory according to the language style and stylistic features of the source text and translation theory must be used skillfully to guide the translation practice in the process of translation.Specific translation skills and methods should be combined to solve the problems encountered in the translation process. In addition, translators must treat translation practice with a serious and rigorous translation attitude.
