What cannot be evaded and should not be evaded while compiling any second language teaching material centers on one issue, namely, how to handle cultural factors and cultural significance. This is determined by the nature and goal of second language teaching. Based on a scrutiny of three historical and contemporary teaching materials, i.e. Lao Qida, Piao Tongshi, New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook, this thesis first examines the content, language functions, the culture making, and the folklore, and meantime analyzes laboriously the proportion, major types and presentation features of the folklore in these materials. This thesis asserts that folklore plays a crucial role for second language teaching materials, which also results in the great popularity of the three materials throughout history. In terms of teaching methodology, second language teaching today has incomparable cognition, both rich and rational. This should be fully reflected in the writing of teaching materials. Also, issues like the nature and goal of second language teaching, cultural perspective, learner-centered approach, and the culture orientation, culture making and folklore adaptation of the language materials deserve our in-depth research. Based on practical teaching experience, this thesis propounds that the folklore adaptation in the language materials for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language should follow the principles of culture, practicability and expansibility, and consequently explores the ways of presentation of the folklore in teaching materials.
