The importance of emphasizing the integration of cultural component when editing asecond language textbook is determined by the nature and the purpose of languageteaching. This thesis paper was written on the basis of a careful and thorough study on NewPractical Chinese Reader Textbook. In the thesis, the author did research on the content oftexts; constituents of folk culture; contents of folk culture. Also, the ratio of appearance offolk culture; major types of folk culture as well as ways and features of presenting them inthe textbook were analysed. Before the start of studying New Practical Chinese ReaderTextbook, the author did literature review on various folk culture related Chinese textbookswhich were meant for non-native Chinese learner so as to better understand how folkculture can be integrated into such books for future purposes. Active and smart usage offolk culture in teaching Chinese as second language is essential, especially with the rapidadvancements of information technology and constantly updated information. The authorbelieved that the emphasis in the integration of folk culture is paramount in theadvancement of teaching Chinese as a second language.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter1described the significance of theselected topic, research methodology, followed by literature review. In Chapter2, theauthor used New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook as the reference to analyse currentChinese textbooks in the market which are meant for non-native Chinese learner.Thissection is focused mainly on the first4volumes of the textbook. The author studied theusage of folk culture in the textbook, and the status quo of integrating folk culture intotextbooks which are meant for people who learn Chinese as their second language. InChapter3, suggestions on the integration of folk culture into these textbooks were made.Chapter4concluded the thesis from three aspects:1) the significance of integratingappropriate folk culture into textbooks meant for people who learn Chinese as a secondlanguage;2) the current selection and usage of folk culture in these textbooks; and3)the learning ability of the people who learn Chinese as a second language.
