George Eliot is a remarkable authoress of British Victorian Age. Her works reveal her profound knowledge in humanity, morality and philosophy as well as her consummate skill of psychoanalysis. And these have aroused permanent enthusiasm for critics to study her since her novels were published. For literary study, there has long been a controversial focus on the female images, and on her feminine consciousness which are embodied in her novels. Eliot's attitude to women is quite an important part of her ethical thought. On one hand she has her sympathy with the rebellious women, and protests against the discrimination and inequality against women,on the other hand she set the pathetic failure in the female emancipation. These amaze the feminist critics a lot, they have problem classifying her as a feminist or an anti-feminst, their attitudes towards George Eliot are quite ambivalent. This thesis intends to analyze the way George Eliot constructs her own discourse authority by analyzing her narrative discourse, and apply the mytho-archetypical criticism to her works, to expound Eliot's unique feminine consciousness that women needs both independent consciousness and integrated humanity.
