William Shakespeare is a household name in the world, who brought prosperity to English drama. As an outstanding playwright, he wrote altogether thirty-eight plays, including the genres of comedy, tragedy, history, and romance. The Tempest, recognized as his last complete play, has been considered to be a piece of imagination, in which Shakespeare focuses on humanity. In the play, it seems that he holds a dualistic view of humanity. This thesis is an attempt to analyze Shakespeare's dualistic view of humanity in The Tempest. The thesis is composed of six parts. The Introduction deals with Shakespeare and The Tempest and a variety of critical views. Chapterâ… mainly deals with his dualistic view of the tripartite soul which is a popular philosophical concept in Renaissance age. It is analyzed from two perspectives: the separation and the integration of the tripartite soul. Chapterâ…¡focuses on his dualistic view of moral tendency, including tendency to evil and tendency to virtue. Chapterâ…¢analyzes his dualistic view of human power in two aspects, namely the limitation and the greatness of human power. Chapterâ…£concentrates on his dualistic view of women. He holds a negative as well as a positive view of women. The thesis ends with a conclusion that Shakespeare's dualistic view of humanity in The Tempest is plausible.
