This article mainly concerns the systematical statistics and thorough description about the frequency of usage and function of the two demonstrative pronouns"here"and"there"appeared in the first eighty chapters of The Dream of the Red Mansion. On this basis it compares the usages of the two demonstrative pronouns"here"and"there"in the first eighty chapters of The Dream of the Red Mansion and contrasts the function of the two demonstrative pronouns with that of them in previous and modern age.Through the synchronic analysis of the two demonstrative pronouns"here"and"there"we find out that in the age of The Dream of the Red Mansion a little complicated asymmetry existed in the number of usage and function of the demonstrative pronous"here"and"there". While through the diachronic comparison between the previous and modern function of The Dream of the Red Mansion we discover that the two demonstrative pronouns have completed their evolution and the transition from the obsolete to the new ones to great extent in the age of The Dream of the Red Mansion . They are considerably similar to Modern Chinese not only in number and form but in function. In addition through the systematical research and diachronic analysis of the two demonstrative pronouns"here"and"there"in the first eighty chapters of The Dream of the Red Mansion we discover that we can basically summarize the same format in origin from every kind of demonstrative pronouns except"here"and"there". Namely, they are derived lexicalize from the formation—"here\there + nouns\quantifiers". While with the lexicalize difference of these words in degree they will have distinguished difference in function. Finally through research and analysis we also find out that in the age of The Dream of the Red Mansion"Er"phenomenon hasn't been furtherly developed and improved although it long existed but affix"Zi"has been highly developed.
