This thesis, entitled as "on the marking of part of speech", studies the 'theobjects of the marking of part of speech', 'the influence of marking of part of speechon the separation of meaning, the choise of the words and the examples used toexplain', 'the marking of concurrent words' on the basis of a thorough study of themarking if part of speech in two medium-sized Chinese dictionaries TheContemporary Chinese Dictionary and The Standard Dictionary of Modern Chinese, with the aim of concluding the experience of marking part of speeches, finding out thedirection of its future development and assessing the gains and losses of this subject. This article presents some original arguments on the basis of comparison, contrast, and statistics done to the above-mentioned two dictionaries:First: every entity in the dictionary is the combination of grapheme, phoneme, part of speech and meaning, on the basis of the marking of the above two dictionaries,we should promote the study of the layers of objects of marking and try to make outthe part of speech of morpheme, word and phrase.Secondly: the marking of part of speech has a certain influence on the separationof meaning, the choise of the words and the examples used to explain. With theintroduction of marking of part of speech, the separation of meaning in dictionariesbecomes more scientific and appropriate; the part of speech of the original word andthe explanatory words should be the same, with the exception of the descriptiveexplanation; the explanatory words should illustrate the typical usages of the originalword as well as some idiomatic usages.Thirdly: the above two dictionaries have similar idea of concurrent words, that is,the concurrent words to a broader sense. Seeing from the point of number, theapplication of the broad-sense concurrent words doesn't add up to the number of theconcurrent words, thus, it should be advocated to group the concurrent words thhatdifferentiate in not only the part of speech but also the meaning into commonconcurrent words.Fourthly: to the issue of divarication in marking concurrent words, on the groundof classifying the types and explore the reasons, I advocate that we can solve theproblem thoroughly if we are earnest enough to enforce our theoretical study.
