This thesis intends to research overly and systematically on Ge Fei's fiction creation. Ge Fei belongs to the Avant Garde, and conspicuously embodies this school's characteristics. Ge's fiction are put in the world literature context, with his life experience together with his knowledge structure taken into consideration during the discussion. First, the thesis focuses on the theme of Ge's fiction, that is, the individual's unkonwability and uncertainty of history. In the early period of his fiction creation, he was strongly influenced by Psychoanalysis and New-historicism, which are typical modern western ideological trends. While writing Face and Peach Blossom, he returned to traditional Chinese subject. Meanwhile, a good grasp of classic western literature also played an essential role. Secondly, in his early period Ge was inspired by Borges, Marquez and Proust, who are either modernists or postmodernists. This is obviously seen from the narrating revolution that Ge carried out in creating artistic styles. Nevertheless, as for the above mentioned influence, once received, it was deepened and developed inward, which is clearly manifested in his later period. After the exposition comes the conclusion: instead of simply imitating, Ge's fiction creation realized a kind of convergence between nationality and universality. Creation through the Chinese language was emphasized to a fairly high degree in the past century. Ge Fei managed to provide an advisable method for the writers followed, who deal with the Chinese language as well. He accepts foreign influence as the starting point of his novel creation but returns to his own tradition ultimately, which can be used as guidance for contemporary Chinese writers.
