| The development of human language has experienced the evolvement from simplicity to complexity and has also taken a big leap from complexity to concision. Ellipsis is one of the important means to make language be concise, so scholars have been paying much attention to study it .In recent years, with the development of news language, linguists start to study news language continuously. News language is usually seen as a functional diversification of language, or a single context. Context is a language diversification according to specific scenes, such as technological English, religious English, and formal English etc. As constitute of news language, although news headline works consistently with human language's economical principle, it is more economical. This article takes news headline as the subject with the consideration of language's types and also makes subdivision of language's types. This article will analyze ellipsis in actual circumstance to get a rational conclusion and explore specific shapes, principles and functions of ellipsis in news titles by semantic, pragmatic and grammatical theories. This whole thesis can be divided into five parts:Chapterâ… :This part mainly introduces the reasons and significance of selecting the title of this thesis and general study situation of title and ellipsis. In addition, it defines the phrase"news title"in a specific way.Chapterâ…¡: This part deals with the forms of ellipsis in news titles. It includes ellipsis of empty words, tense, unknown information and adherent structures. In the aspect of ellipsis of empty words, we take auxiliary words, prepositions and conjunctions as the subject. Because of the need to pursue appellation, lots of reportorial titles omit elements of tense with the form of small sentence. Ellipsis in news titles not only includes known information but also interferes with unknown information which is the kind of information people don't known and pay less attention to. It always takes important statue in a sentence, such as subject and object. Ellipsis caused by adherent structures is peculiar to titles. We discuss this grammatical phenomenon from four parts, including time, space, thing and logic.Chapterâ…¢: This part is about the inspection and study on the means and principles of ellipsis in news titles. Ellipses in news titles have such four means as elements omision, sentence pattern transformation, change of word's function and meaning explanation. Ellipsis in news titles must accords with the principles of need, definitude and words arrangement module.Chapterâ…£: This part is concerned with the investigation on the rhetoric functions of ellipsis in news titles. Rhetoric function mainly manifested in four aspects: brief expression, attractive generalization piloting way of reading and harmonizing the rhymeConclusion: This part gives the summary of the whole thesis and then puts forward the questions for further and deeper study, such as the advanced study on ambiguity structure, the forms of ellipsis resulted by punctuation and appreciative words. |
