Commonly used words are the core of the vocabulary system. They are crucial in the vocabulary system. We should make a point of researching the commonly used words. Verb is the important part in the vocabulary system, especially the verbs about hands action. Because working with hands not only has played an important role in the naissance of the human being and the society, but also is going on playing an indispensable role in the daily life. So, it is valuable in the study on the commonly used words of hands action. In this thesis, we takes the commonly used verbs expressing hands action without tools as the research object, semantic field theory as the research theory, the first ancient period and the modern times as the research range. We describe the commonly used verbs of hands action in detail respectively in the first ancient perion and in the modern times. On the basis of the respective description in two historical period, we do the comparison of them, aiming at exploring the characteristics and the evolution or development of the commonly used verbs of hands action respectively in the first ancient Chinese and the modern Chinese.The whole thesis is composed of three parts:The first part : introduction. We will mainly to introduce the status of this problem, and will introduce the research object, the study method and the material. The second one : main part. According to the different function and the action of the hands, we will divide the 62 commonly used verbs of hands action in the first ancient Chinese and the 69 in the modern Chinese into five concept sorts. Referring to the meaning in the dictionary and investigating the practical usage, we will do the detailed description of every collected word, compare them in the smallest semantic field, analyse the relationship of the sememes in the smallest semantic field, such as synonym, hyponymy,.we will compare and research the development or substitution of the commonly used verbs of hands action in the first ancient Chinese and the modern Chinese by analysis of vocabulary, semantic, grammar .The third part : conclusion. On the basis of the analysis it is obvious that monosyllabic verb takes a large proportion of the commonly used verbs of hands action in the first ancient Chinese and the modern Chinese. Secondly, it reflects that the concept is objective, the semantic field is historical, and the sememes are relative to each other. Thirdly, the whole semantic field on the commonly used verbs of hands action in the first ancient Chinese is more abundant than that in the modern Chinese.
