Johannes Brahms is one of the most important and original composers in the Romantic period. As the representatives of chamber music in late of 19th century, his two sonatas (op.120) have a significant place in the solo repertoire for viola.This dissertation consists of three chapters with un introduction and un epilogue. In introduction, I indicates the general style context of this two pieces by summarizing the characters of late chamber music of Brahms. In the first chapter, I firstly show the composing background of the two sonatas form a view of historical musicology, then, I carefully analyze the structure of the works and indicate the characters on harmony, texture and musical expression. The second chapter is the center of the dissertation, after a concise presentation of the romantic solo viola music and the application of viola in Brahms' works; I comprehensively analyze the interpretative procession and the technical difficulties as an interpreter. With the basis of the first two chapters, I list the important performance editions of this two works and show the personal interpreting of every masters. Finally, I summarize the above respects and give the status for this two works in the 19th century chamber music and solo viola documents.
