| Nowadays, English has become a universal language, which is playing an important part in international intercourse and cooperation. Different countries have their particular cultural beliefs in value,religion and customs. For a foreign language learner, studying a language means the study of a culture. Cultural differences require that modern English teaching transfer from the earlier sole language teaching to the education of ideas and cultural communication. To promote a better understanding and draw lessons from different cultures, college English teaching should implement cross-cultural education with a definite aim and plan based on the premise of respecting different cultures.The introduction of the thesis mostly expounds the reason why we put forward, and briefly gives and explains the definition of"Cross-culture"and"Cross-cultural education".It also describes the present situations about the world's cross-cultural education by listing some of the facts and related materials. At the same time, it points out some defects in the theory and practice of cross-cultural education. Part two mainly defines the necessity of carrying out cross-cultural education in college English teaching: Cross-cultural education is first of all the requirement of language learning and cultural differences; it is also the requirement to develop college students'social skills. Besides, it contributes to the understanding of foreign culture and the development of native culture. Finally, it is the trend towards the internationalization of our country's higher education. The third part explores the defects and the problems existed in college cross-cultural education based on concerned documents, questionnaires and interviews with some English teachers from two colleges in Jinan. Part four puts forwards some helpful suggestions on how to improve cross-cultural education that are directed against the existing problems in it. That is:propose specific aims; improve English teachers'cross-cultural awareness and quality; reform the patterns and contents of English teachers'further education; cultivate students'correct attitude towards cross-culture; enrich the contents of cross-cultural education; choose appropriate teaching methods.The ultimate purpose of cross-cultural education is to arm the students with rich cross-cultural knowledge, to develop cross-cultural attitudes of respect, tolerance, equality, objectivity, thus enabling students to be open-minded, to form an objective international awareness without prejudice, and to participate effectively in the international affairs. |
