The development of auxiliary words reflects the gradual development and changes of the Chinese language, in particular the late middle Chinese language. While Song Dynasty is the time when the system of auxiliary words was generally formed, with structures of all sorts of auxiliary words and their functions being stable and explicit. Then, this paper mainly reports the researches on the form and development of auxiliary words in Song Dynasty, as well as its origin and source.The recorded utterance from the Chan sect and the Confucians collections and poems of Song Dynasty were chosen as the language material for the present study. Features and the developmental rules of Song Dynasty auxiliary words were analyzed and described through applying the following ways together: both ways of researching by period and comparing with the history, both ways of the exhaustive statistical collection combined with the illustrative.There are three chapters in this paper. The first one is an introduction to the definition and categories of auxiliary words, the meaning and method as well as the language materials for the present research. In Chapter Two, the author divided auxiliary words into five categories and described the respective usage of each category in detail. Chapter Three concluded this paper, giving the evaluations on the development of auxiliaiy words in the late middle Chinese language and in Song Dynasty, and evaluations on the position of Song Dynasty auxiliary words in the historical development of Chinese language.
