Children like to read mythology, legends and fairy tales. In fact, they even believe the happenings in myth and fairy tales are true in real life, reluctant to tell the imagined world from the real world. They always want to know more about the story; for example, after the wedding of Cinderella or Snow White, is there a really happily ever after, or what's going to happen to the Ugly Duckling after he is found swan. Is he accepted to the group of swan? This thesis will draw a parallel study between Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stones from a myth-archetypal approach, with the prospect to explain the popularity and influence among children readers. There are three reasons I compare Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stones. Firstly, L. M. Montgomery and J. K. Rowling compose the stories from children's perspective, since both stories are children-oriented, most of the readers are children. Secondly, both Anne and Harry reflect the archetypes of the Ugly Duckling, and they continue the story as they set up a brand new image of the Ugly Duckling. Finally, both stories have a motif in common, that is, small potatoes can work wonders and win respect from others, as long as they are persistent in their belief and hard work. Despite the fact that Anne and Harry are the characters created in different times or different centuries, both stories just carry so many points in common, all of which explain their great prevalence all over the world. My thesis originated a comparative study of Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stones from an archetypal approach, since no critic has ever compared the two books and no critic has ever studied Anne of Green Gables from an archetypal approach. Here Anne and Harry not only carry on the story of the Ugly Duckling, but also set up a brand new image of this well-known fairy tale figure, which explains their popularity among children. And most importantly, Montgomery and Rowling try to impart truth of life and virtues of man in the story, so as to navigate children readers to a muchpromising and brilliant prospect of life.
