| Image, as a vehicle to convey experience, is frequently employed in literature, especially in poetry. Intertextuality, too, involves the expressing and rewriting of experience. Image not only concerns intertextuality (in its narrow sense), but carries intratextuality as well. This is most palpable in the Prophetic Poems and the Songs of A Dream of Red Mansions in A Dream of Red Mansions. These poems and songs are supposed to indicate the fortunes of the major personae and the general plot of the fiction through the intertextuality they carry.The theories of image and the theories of intertextuality have both been integrated into translation study. Different methods of image translation may bring different changes to intertextuality, for example, the change of its category, and may generate discrepant readability of the target texts. The present thesis seeks to compare and analyze the two versions of the Prophetic Poems and the Songs of A Dream of Red Mansions by Hawkes and Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang from the perspective of intertextuality, and determine the differences of translation strategy, the intertextuality thereby changed and the effect therefore reached, the possible reasons for these differences, and the strategy a translator may need to adopt in the translation of images containing a high degree of intertextuality.Through comparison and analysis, the present thesis proposes that in the translation of image, a translator may need not only a comparatively proper strategy, but also a gesture which comprises a Bakhtinean"dialogue"with the author as well as the rewriting of experiences from the perspective of intertextuality. |
