Ballet is an art form of the human body, which is fraught with a lot room for imagination. If there be a vivid metaphor for the history of dance in 19th century, it must be, I think, appropriate to say it as brocade, in which every bright and colourful threat represents a different style; changing designs linked closely, is a symbol of the dramatic development of the art of western dance accompanied by uneven routes. August Bouraonville, a well-known Danish Choreographer, ballet master, and the father of the Danish ballet school, is one of the green threads in the brocade. Although he has passed away for more than a century, his influence has been sustained so long that the fresh flavor permeated, the fun and unique style in his works could be felt till now, just like a green branch, spreading to the contemporary world.Taking Bournonville's life experiences, views on dance and artistic contributions as starting points, this paper attempts to make a comprehensive and deep study on him against the historical and cultural background. The thesis has three chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the great master of ballet. This chapter is further divided into two parts with its emphasis on Bournonville's life experiences, and those influential factors on his ideas of art. The second chapter deals with his art, mainly from his artistic style, the relevant disciplines of arts and interpretation of his representative works. The third chapter analyzes his influences on art. Part one is about the foundation of Danish Ballet School; part two is about his contributions to the Royal Danish Ballet and Affiliated Ballet School; part three is on the protection, inheritance and dissemination of Bournonville's tradition. This chapter will focus on the Royal Danish Ballet and the Ballet School, because they are the consistent protector and inheritor of Bournonvill's tradition. In order to pursue his favorite art of dance, Bournonville worked silently in Danish for nearly half a century. He established the Danish Ballet school and created a miracle in the Ballet history and made Danish ballet world-renowned and left a number of outstanding cultural inheritances for human beings. No doubt,Bournonville's contributions to the development of Danish Ballet school and world ballet history are inestimable. His name has been carved in the memory of history because he is an artist promoting the progress of human civilization.
